Karsu

HET PAROOL
****
De kracht van de film zit niet alleen in het portret van een bijzondere, innemende Turkse familie in het hart
van Amsterdam, maar ook in het feit dat we Karsu's entrée in de muziekwereld van achter de schermen meemaken.

NRC HANDELSBLAD / NRC NEXT
****
Prachtige documentaire…

***
Een sumpathiek en warm portret… ontroerend.

Synopsis

Seventeen year old Karsu Dönmez - the Dutch answer to Norah Jones -  is a talented jazz singer-songwriter, who grew up in a Turkish family in Amsterdam. Full of passion she sings and plays piano in her parents' Turkish restaurant. At night, she composes her music in absolute silence. Although her songs seem to reveal a soulful intensity, Karsu denies to sing about her private life. Yet  bit by bit she draws us into her secret world, which is closely related to Turkish traditions. Growing up with both Turkish and Dutch values Karsu tries to find her own path.

'Karsu' is an intimate portrait. For three years, director Mercedes Stalenhoef follows Karsu’s journey through adolescence and the world of music. She dreams of making a record, studying at the Music Academy and going on holiday with her friends. Initially her parents, who grew up with traditional Turkish music, had to get accustomed to her music. But now they are proud of their beautiful daughter: they support and protect her and when she is invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York, the entire family accompanies her there. In the ensuing period, everything moves very quickly and requests for gigs and interviews put a stress on the family. Karsu needs a manager, yet her parents fear a contract with unrealistic career demands.

Life in the Dönmez manner, however, goes on. We witness Karsu going about her daily life in Amsterdam and spending a summer vacation with her family in the mountain village of ‘Karsu’ in Turkey. This is when we catch a glimpse of Karsu’s father’s past and the poignant story of her father's migration to the Netherlands. Lively scenes are intercut with Karsu's music, in which reflections about life, grief, and wishful desires are captured with affecting beauty and piercing precision in her personal songs.

'Karsu' is the new film of filmmaker Mercedes Stalenhoef, the director of ‘Carmen meets Borat’, which was a big hit at many international film festivals, and was broadcasted worldwide. ‘Carmen meets Borat’ was also selected as the Dutch submission for the Oscars. 'Karsu' was selected for the IDFA Melkweg Competition for Music Documentary 2012 and had a wonderfull premiere at Tuschinski 1 during IDFA.
